Feeding Excell™ S.B Adds Value During Weaning and Feedlot Situations

Updated: Sep 19

  • Feeding Excell™ S.B. combines the benefits of Excell and Micro S.B., enhancing nutritional and health advantages for cattle, especially in high pathogen challenges, calving, weaning, and feedlot situations.

  • Excell™ supports strong appetite and feed intake, additional nutrient intake for immune function, and growth and performance comparable to antibiotics like Monensin and Lasalocid.

  • Micro S.B. (S. Boulardii) is a high-quality probiotic yeast that supports animal performance, immune system, and intestinal microflora through various modes of action like modulating the microbiome and immune system.

  • S. Boulardii in calves improves intake, weight gain, and gut health, while in feedlot cattle, it reduces BRD treatment rates, improves ADG, feed efficiency, and overall cost of gain.

  • The combination of Excell™ S.B. offers a winning solution for nutritional and health needs in cattle operations, being cost-effective and beneficial for animal health programs.

Nutrition Drives Animal Health

Two management strategies productive and profitable beef herds have in common are paying attention to nutritional needs and good animal health programs.

Added value is achieved from feeding Excell™ S.B. by compounding the nutritional and health benefits of Excell with the similar benefits of Micro S.B., a Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Boulardii, in all stages of cattle especially cows and calves in high pathogen challenges, during calving, weaning and feedlot situations.

The Next Generation of Animal Health!

Benefits of Excell™:

Strong Appetite and Feed intake

·        Consistent dry matter intake is important for maintaining healthy high performing cattle. Excell™ will help stimulate feed intake of cattle and optimize rumen function by supporting an optimum rumen micro-flora population which is responsible for the fermentation and digestion of feed.

Additional Nutrient Intake to Maintain Strong Immune Function

·         Feeding Excell™ will help maintain nutrient intake by sustaining a high population of rumen bacteria and the additional microbial protein produced to stimulate immune function and health.

Additional Growth and Performance Compared to Ionophores

·         Three University animal trials and in vitro studies have documented Excell™, an all-natural Lactobacillus fermentation product can replace the antibiotics: Monensin and Lasalocid in beef rations with equal to superior gain and comparable feed efficiency.

Excell™ Supports Rumen Function, Animal Performance and Health

·         Excell™ is a lactobacillus fermentation product containing prebiotic components and bioactive metabolytes that support microbial populations in the digestive system of the rumen and intestine.

Benefits of Micro S.B:

Micro S.B. is a high-quality probiotic yeast. Saccharomyces Cerevisiae var. Boulardii (S. Boulardii) has been proven to support animal performance, the immune system, and the intestinal microflora, in multiple species. S. Boulardii can grow in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, is resistant to bile acids and gastric pH conditions of the intestine.

Multiple Modes of Action S. Boulardii

·         modulating the intestinal microbiome, lowering gut pH and prevention of pathogen overgrowth

·         production of acetic production and growth of butyrate producers

·         antimicrobial activity, immune modulation, enzyme activity and pathogen binding

·         competitive inhibition, blocking toxin receptors or acting as a decoy receptor for toxins, adhering to some toxins and pathogens

·         immune modulator, increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines, and decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines

Micro S.B. Helps Calves and Feedlot Cattle

In calves S. Boulardii has been shown to:

·         improve dry matter intake, average daily gain, body weight and lower the occurrence of diarrhea at times of stress

·         maintain a healthy gut: increased crypt depth, tight junction structure, mucin production and reduced pathogen load (leaky gut issues)

·         promote higher antibody titers when vaccinated

In the feedlot, newly received cattle supplemented with S. Boulardii show:

·         to have a lower BRD treatment rate for the first 42-45 days on feed

·         improved ADG, improved feed to gain ratio, and improved cost of gain for the entire feeding period

·         a significant decrease in treatments (32%+), lower cortisol and pro-inflammatory cytokine concentrations when challenged with a pathogen

Micro S.B is approximately 20% more cost effective than competitor products.

Excell™ S.B. is a winning combination to compound value for your operation's nutritional needs and animal health programs.

Field Trial with Micro S.B. (Saccharomyces Boulardii)

A field trial was conducted on three groups of newborn dairy calves totaling 1845 head received in three separate groups three weeks apart and each group fed milk replacer for 42 days. The trial was designed as an off, on, off study with the first group of 628 untreated control calves received on week one. 603 treatment calves were received one week later and treated with 1g/head/day of Micro S.B. in the milk replacer. 614 untreated control calves in group three were received in week three. This arrangement provided two control groups and one treatment group.

Parameters recorded were number of total respiratory treatments, IV and electrolyte treatments for scours and number of calf death loss. Calves that were dehydrated from scours were treated with electrolytes, and calves that were severely dehydrated from scours were treated with I.V. fluids. Data from group one was averaged for calculations.

Results

The Micro S.B treated calves reduced the number of respiratory, and I.V. treatments and calf death:

·         Reduced the total number of respiratory treatments by 16.8% and the number of calves needing respiratory treatments by 9.2% which relates in $499.95 in reduced treatment cost

·          I.V therapy treatments for severely dehydrated calves was reduced by 51% or $127

·         Death loss was reduced 1.74% (5.88% in the control groups to 4.15% in the Micro S.B. group. This provided a benefit of $4,025 based on a calf value of $350

·         Micro S.B. did not reduce the incidence of scours in these calves, but it did reduce the severity of the scours

All-Natural Excell™ Out Performs Monensin and Lasalocid

A 45-day backgrounding calf trial at the University of Idaho showed a .23 pound per day improvement over monensin fed calves when Excell™ was included in the liquid supplement.

At the time of the trial, this extra gain was worth $15.32 net return per steer. Preliminary feed efficiency data indicates no difference compared to monensin fed steers.

160 cross bred steers were blocked by weight and breed and randomly assigned to one of two liquid supplement treatments.  The Monensin treatment contained monensin at 350 grams per ton and the Excell™ treatment contained Excell™ liquid at 5 grams per day.  Cattle were fed ad lib on a diet consisting 75% ground alfalfa hay, 10% cracked corn, 10% wheat middlings, and 5% liquid supplement.

Steers fed Excell™ liquid at 5 grams per head per day gained .23 lbs. more per day, (7.3%)

than the Monensin fed steers and total gain was 9.9 pounds (7.5%) more than the Monensin group over the 45-day feeding period.

A 39-day backgrounding calf trial at the University of Idaho showed a 5.6 pound per animal improvement over Lasalocid fed calves when Excell was included in the liquid feeding supplement. At the time of the trial, this extra gain was valued at $7.84 with a $5.11 per calf net return.

The objective of this study was to measure the effect of Excell on weight gain in backgrounding calves. 322 grouped heifer and steer calves were paired by weaning weight and randomly assigned to either the control or Excell treatments. The Control treatment contained Lasalocid at 60 mg per head per day and Excell was fed at 5 cc per head per day mixed into a liquid supplement fed at 1.2 pounds per head per day.
