Prevention of Health Issues Requires a Strong Immune Function

Optimum health can be defined as the ability of an animal’s immune system to recognize, defend, and eliminate health challenges, including pathogens, injuries, parasites, and stress.

To achieve an optimal health status, initiation of the immune system must be developed at an early age, since passive immune protection declines during the first week and before the newborn has a competent immune function as shown in Figure 1.

Initiation of immune development is a function of age and gut microbiota production of short chain fatty acids, especially butyrate.

Value of Excell on Health and Immune Function

Significant research on the immune function has documented that butyrate is the main energy source for development and maintenance of the epithelial tissue of the gut lining, immune tissues, and many immune functions.

Research at the University of Georgia on feeding Excell™, an all-natural lactobacillus fermentation product from Pacer Technology, has documented elevated levels of short chain fatty acids especially butyrate in the colon of calves. These studies show an increased butyrate production of 7.33% and total short chain fatty acid production of 18.28 %. See Figure 2 and 3 below.

The significant elevation of butyrate by the microbiome in the colon of these calves supports recent research on immune function and maintaining health status of animals.

Focus on the Health and Functionality of the Intestine

The health and integrity of the digestive system is especially important for more than digestion and adsorption of nutrients. It is also the location of 75% of the animal’s immune system including the epithelial tissue, mucus layer and gut microbiome that regulates and controls immune functions. See figure 4 below.

The microbiome performs the following functions:

•        Modulates and regulates the immune system’s functions

•        Detects and defends against invading pathogens

•        Provides short chain fatty acids especially butyrate by metabolizing and fermenting various dietary components that are needed for gut health and optimum immune function

Butyrate is Essential to Optimum Immune Function

Butyrate helps maintain intestinal balance and integrity by strengthening the gut barrier, enhancing tight junctions at the mucus layer, and the production of antimicrobial peptides.

Its anti-inflammatory actions protect from inflammatory diseases and helps initiate the appropriate response to pathogens and supports healing  to repair epithelial damage following inflammation and infection.

Butyrate supports normal intestinal function by acting as the main energy source for growth and proliferation of colonocytes cells in the epithelial lining.

Key Points to Remember about Excell™:

•      Excell™ supports the digestive microbiome of the rumen and intestine by increasing the population and diversity of the commensal organisms

•      Excell™ increases production of VFA levels especially butyrate in both the rumen and intestine

•      Butyrate is the preferred and most efficient source of energy for the epithelial tissue of the digestive system and immune components

•      Feeding Excell™ will provide both nutritional and digestive support to help promote optimal performance and keep animals immune systems healthy
